It reads: “When a child is born cursed, his family tries every remedy they can find, but one of his siblings believes the answer lies within the curse itself.” Lines from the story appear in sequence at bottom: “Nadia came running into the room first when she heard her little sister’s scream pierce the evening air. Adrian was in his fifteenth year of life. He stood in a corner of his room. Rosa stood frozen at the doorway. Nadia looked over at the corner, where in the shadows, her brother’s eyes glowed red. A red that flickered as he blinked.” Animations: The words “glowing red” turn from gray to red, which then glows. The word “red” in the last line turns red, glows and winks out then reappears. Welcome to Year 10 of Storyfeather

Every year’s short stories (mostly) follow a theme. For Year Ten, every month’s stories share a genre or theme, some anchor point that the reader can rely on. But within that, there are strange concoctions brewing. The genre’s merge, archetypes collide, mythologies mash…welcome to the Year of Fusion.

FUSION RECIPE
Base element for January: Beasts! Beasts of myth, legend, nightmare, and dream.
Fusion Element: Spectacles

The inspiration for this story is a creature I drew for an art challenge, a werewolf-like creature from Portugal and Brazil known as the lobisomem. In some versions of the lore, the creature isn’t even a wolf, but resembles a huge pig or dog. The lobisomem’s transformation isn’t linked to the moon, but may be linked to birth order and may be triggered by a crossroads at a certain time on a certain day.

I included some of these details in my story about a baby who is born cursed simply because he’s child number six, and his five preceding siblings were all girls.  As he grows up, his family struggles to find a cure for the curse with some success.  But it seems that no remedy they find will hold back the curse for long.
