The Margin Alien

To rescue her brother, a woman jumps into what she believes is a dimensional rift generated by a device that he has invented.

This story is from Year 8, The Year of Revisitation
I revisit one of the stories I’ve already written, and write a new standalone story connected to or inspired by the existing one through a character, a place, an object, a continuation of events (okay, sequel), and so on.

Music: “Story at Night (Looped)” by Andy Ray from GameDev Market

I’ve written a lot of stories about inventors inventing things. This week’s story admittedly came to me in a weird dream. (Someone had gotten tossed into a dimensional rift and my supremely unqualified dream-self was being fitted with a tether to jump in and try to find them.) But while writing the story, I was most inspired by a previous tale about a lone inventor who builds a machine that sends her into another dimension—not a spatial dimension but a temporal one.

[Video Description: Trailer. Duration, 39 seconds. Music: “Story at Night (Looped)” by Andy Ray. Digital drawing. Left half bottom, a woman in a plaid shirt and wearing a parachute harness seen from the waist-up, glancing up and over her left shoulder.  Right half, a translucent tree with two branches. An eagle with rainbow-colored feathers is perched on one branch, wings partly extended, gazing down at the woman. Bars of light cross around the woman and the eagle. The ground is a hazy. Sparks and hazy bubbles are dispersed everywhere. The words “Short Story” and “Genre: Science Fantasy” are displayed in front of the image. The title card fades and lines from the story appear in glowing text and text boxes, alternately: “‘You come from within the margins. Where there are well-defined boundaries…Reality.’ ‘Isn’t this also real?’ ‘It is for now.’ ‘You are right to leave here, and quickly, before the queen captures you too.’ ‘Is it illegal for me to be here?’ ‘Of course not, but she just doesn’t like it.’ ‘Are you…are you here the take me to the queen?’ ‘I have no official affiliations.’ ‘I am here in the service of curiosity.’” The title appears as the last line fades. A watermark of the site URL appears at bottom center throughout.]

Genre: Science Fantasy, Fantasy, Science Fiction
