After following their queen and captain into voluntary exile, the crew of the Echidna build an experimental engine that they hope will help them to survive, and even establish a new colony.
This story is from Year 8, The Year of Revisitation
I revisit one of the stories I’ve already written, and write a new standalone story connected to or inspired by the existing one through a character, a place, an object, a continuation of events (okay, sequel), and so on.
This story revisits the Year Three story entitled “The Adventure of the Goliath,” in which a couple of agents who investigate unusual phenomena follow a distress signal coming from an unusual source. How are they connected? The new story serves as a prequel, with the end of the story connecting to the beginning of old one.
[Video description: No sound. Duration is 13 seconds. Digital drawing. A ship shaped like a submarine appears on the bottom half moving toward a glowing anomaly in the center of the image. Lightning, sparks, and gases emerge from the anomaly and stream outward. A zigzag pattern with nodes at each junction glows on the ship’s hull and is reflected above and below the ship. Lightning-like energy flows out from two dorsal thrusters. The words “Short Story” are displayed at the top of the image. Below them is written the story’s genre, “Science Fiction.” The words fade away as an animation begins. The dorsal thrusters spark and stream some kind of plasma or energy. Lens flares appear at the nose of the ship and float out toward the viewer. A tagline appears at the top: “The exiled crew of the Echidna build an experimental engine, not just to keep surviving, but to keep striving.” The tagline fades, replaced by the story’s title. The website name “storyfeather.com” appears at the bottom throughout.]
