Welcome to Year 10 of Storyfeather
Every year’s short stories (mostly) follow a theme. For the tenth year, every month’s stories share a genre or theme, some anchor point that the reader can rely on. But within that, there are strange concoctions brewing. The genre’s merge, archetypes collide, mythologies mash…welcome to the Year of Fusion.

As I was listening to a horror movie review podcast, washing dishes, and thinking about what this week’s story could be, one of the hosts of the podcast said the word “ghost.” And that got me thinking about ghostly fairies. I’ve written at least a couple of stories where I posit that fairies don’t have souls. Can’t recall where I first encountered that concept, if it was some movie from my youth or some article I read ages ago. So if they don’t have souls, then what happens to them when they die? Do they cease to exist except perhaps in memory and record? Also, why don’t they have souls? I started wondering if that could be linked to their ability to do magic (forgive me if this is a concept that a hundred other writers have explored). So, they do have something equivalent to a human soul, but it’s the energy they use to do magic. And once it’s spent, the fairy dies, even without any injury to body or mind. And off we go…
How I did the digital drawing for my story, “The Ghost of the Fairy Prince,” from a sketch to the final image.

His head is facing left, but he is looking forward with glittering eyes. Above the hills is a blue sky with scattered clouds. Text at bottom reads “Digital Drawing for Short Story.” A fade animation displays a portion of the starting sketch. The words “Sketch to Final Drawing” appears at middle. All text and final image fade to show the full starting sketch. Video transitions through several images showing sketch, inking, laying down of base colors, addition of shadows, highlights, and textures, and finally the addition of a background to arrive at the final image. The story title, “The Ghost of the Fairy Prince” appears at bottom. A watermark of “Storyfeather.com” appears bottom center throughout.
