An ordinary mouse was once chosen to receive a great honor that came at a great cost.
On this page, you’ll find the podcast episode trailer and the full episode.
And of course, a link to the source, the short story.
[Video description: 30 seconds. Scan of inked drawing, digitally colored. Three mice at center. The center mouse stands on hind legs and faces forward, wearing dark glasses, and holding a cane in the left paw. Behind, only their front halves visible are two mice on all fours. The standing mouse appears to be resting the right paw on the mouse at left, who also wears dark glasses. The mouse at right has right paw raised and wears a blindfold. The ends of three tails rise toward the left. The mice appear to be in front of an opening that’s low to the ground. Bright light radiates from them. Watermark of the word “storyfeather” lays over the image. Title card with the words “Podcast Episode” and “Genre: Fable” and story title are displayed over the image. The title and title card fade. Subtitles appear in time with music and narration at the bottom: “‘Mice do not yield,’ I continued. ‘In the face of danger, we fight or we bite. In the face of troubles and trials, we scrounge and we scrap. When there is a wall between us and our quarry, we build a door. When there is a path fraught with puzzles and hurdles, we find a way through, or we find a way around.’” Website URL appears at bottom right throughout and fades as text box appears over image displaying the words, “Listen on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, iHeartRadio, Spotify, Stitcher, and so on. Or listen on my Podcast page at storyfeather.com.” Title reappears at top.]
The Blinding of the Mice – Storyfeather
EXCERPT:
I could not see the edge of the knife, but I felt the promised bite of the blade at the base of my tail. Courage is a strange thing. For when you think you have it, you are wrong. And when you think you don’t have it…you are wrong.
When I stepped ever-so-carefully onto that dais where the Ritual was to begin, I thought I had all the courage I would need.
I was wrong.
BEHIND THE “SCENES”
The nursery rhyme about the three blind mice serves as the inspiration for this story. But it’s not the origin. It’s about the legacy that those mice have unwittingly left behind, and how one of their modern descendants struggles with the life-altering effects that those stories from history and legend have on him and those who share his fate.
