“Isle of the Immortal Crab” Trailer. Duration, 43 seconds. “Dungeon of Shadows (seamless)” by Nicholas Jeudy. Digital painting. An island in the shape of a crab facing forward, legs dangling below the surface of tropical waters. The body appears to be made of rock. A canopy of trees appears on top of the crab’s head (or the island’s surface). At upper left are dark gray clouds. At right are white clouds and rays of light shining down into the water. On the crab’s underside is a sparkling red-orange glow. At right on the water’s surface is the silhouette of a boat. Title card with the words “Short Story” and “Genre: Mythology,” is displayed at top. Tagline is displayed at bottom. It reads: “Treasure hunters seeking a legendary jewel on a forbidding isle take along a girl who has visions and a man who escaped the isle and swore never to return.” Title card and tagline fade. A watermark of the word “storyfeather” appears over the image. Lines from the story appear in sequence in different positions and different colors: “Legend says the crab did not like the sunlight. So his mother made a shroud of clouds for him. You have seen disaster, haven’t you? Why do they not listen to you? Because I am a child. When people go to the island and crawl all over him, he doesn’t like it. I’m afraid, but I have to go. Do not follow a fool into folly. Protect her, and only her.” Site URL appears at bottom center throughout and fades at end. As the last line disappears, the story title appears at center, and a text card appears at top that reads “Available to Read Now.”
Welcome to Year 10 of Storyfeather
Every year’s short stories (mostly) follow a theme. For Year Ten, every month’s stories share a genre or theme, some anchor point that the reader can rely on. But within that, there are strange concoctions brewing. The genre’s merge, archetypes collide, mythologies mash…welcome to the Year of Fusion.

FUSION RECIPE
Base element for January: Beasts! Beasts of myth, legend, nightmare, and dream. Fusion
Element: Visions. Metamorphosis.
I’m doing a creature-centered art challenge for January 2023, and the first prompt on the first day was Karkinos, a giant crab from Greek mythology who attacked Heracles while he was fighting the Hydra. But the crab did not succeed in helping the Hydra. Heracles crushed the crab under his feet and killed it. The goddess Hera then turned the crab into a constellation.

In my story, the giant crab was the immortal son of a sea god, who somehow died, and whose remains then turned into a haunted isle covered in gray clouds. But the crab’s heart turned into a jewel so precious that it was worth it for some to go looking for this jewel, even at the cost of life and limb.
