A woman observes an unnatural change in her sister linked to a chunk of amber that her sister stumbles upon and begins to study.
This story is from Year 8, The Year of Revisitation
I revisit one of the stories I’ve already written, and write a new standalone story connected to or inspired by the existing one through a character, a place, an object, a continuation of events (okay, sequel), and so on.
This story was inspired by the Year One story entitled “Nocturnal,” in which a couple of agents who typically investigate unusual cases centered around science, must partner with the division of their agency that investigates the supernatural and paranormal. I aimed to the write the “origin story” of that division that investigates the paranormal. But I digressed! I found my aim shifting to focus on one strange incident that might eventually inspire the creation of that division.
[Video Description: Trailer. Duration, 21 seconds. No music. No sound effects. Digital drawing. A young woman wearing late nineteenth-century dress sits just left of center before an alcove with three windows bearing ornate snowflake patterns on the top pane (of three panes). She is looking down at a book in which she is writing. A candle burns at the bottom left. The flame is animated and flickers throughout. A ghostly hand presses against the bottom right pane of the farthest window from her. The words “Short Story” and “Genre: Mystery” are displayed in front of the image. The words fade and are replaced by the story’s title. The title vanishes. A story quote appears at the bottom. “If natural things like insects could be preserved…Then perhaps things unnatural could be preserved as well.” The story’s tagline appears and fades: “A woman observes an unnatural change in her sister linked to a chunk of amber that her sister stumbles upon and begins to study.” Website URL is displayed at the very bottom throughout.]
